AYER MOLEK PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE GETS A NEW LOOK, UNIMEL STUDENTS CREATE COMMUNITY IMPACT
AYER MOLEK, MELAKA – A once dull and weathered pedestrian bridge has been transformed into a vibrant public space through the creative efforts of students from Universiti Islam Melaka (UNIMEL) as part of the Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat (WRUR) Programme in the Ayer Molek State Constituency.
The beautification initiative reflects UNIMEL’s commitment to community development through active student engagement. Beyond enhancing the appearance of a public facility, the programme also strengthened the strategic relationship between the university and the local community.
The programme was attended by YB Rahmad bin Mariman, Melaka State Executive Councillor for Education, Higher Education and Religious Affairs, together with UNIMEL Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Ts. Abdul Khalil Shawkataly. Their presence underscored the continued commitment of the state government, higher education institutions and the community in fostering inclusive and sustainable community development.
According to Prof. Datuk Dr. Ts. Abdul Khalil Shawkataly, student participation in community-based programmes provides an invaluable platform for nurturing graduates who excel not only academically but also possess leadership qualities, social responsibility and a strong spirit of volunteerism.
“Programmes such as this provide students with the opportunity to embrace their social responsibility while contributing directly to the well-being of the community. Such field experiences help shape a generation that is competitive, ethical and responsive to the needs of society,” he said.
In line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the programme supports SDG 4: Quality Education by promoting experiential learning that nurtures holistic and socially responsible graduates. At the same time, the effort to revitalise public infrastructure contributes to SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities by creating a cleaner, safer and more welcoming environment for the public. The close collaboration between UNIMEL, the Melaka State Government and the local community also reflects the aspirations of SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, highlighting the importance of strategic partnerships in achieving sustainable development.
The WRUR Programme in Ayer Molek demonstrates that UNIMEL students are capable of becoming agents of change by contributing their ideas, energy and creativity to generate meaningful and lasting benefits for society.
From the transformation of a single pedestrian bridge emerged a much greater message—that UNIMEL students are not merely learners in the classroom, but leaders of positive change who foster unity, strengthen community values and contribute towards building a more sustainable and harmonious society, in line with the University’s aspiration of producing knowledgeable, ethical and community-oriented graduates.
JEJANTAS AYER MOLEK BERTUKAR WAJAH, MAHASISWA UNIMEL CETUS IMPAK KOMUNITI
AYER MOLEK, MELAKA – Jejantas yang sebelum ini kelihatan kusam kini tampil lebih ceria dan menarik hasil sentuhan kreatif mahasiswa Universiti Islam Melaka (UNIMEL) menerusi Program Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat (WRUR) Dewan Undangan Negeri (DUN) Ayer Molek.
Program gotong-royong dan keceriaan ini menjadi manifestasi komitmen UNIMEL dalam menyokong pembangunan komuniti melalui penglibatan aktif mahasiswa di lapangan. Selain mencantikkan persekitaran awam, inisiatif tersebut turut memperkukuh hubungan strategik antara institusi pengajian tinggi dengan masyarakat setempat.
Program berkenaan telah disertai oleh Yang Berhormat Rahmad bin Mariman, EXCO Pendidikan, Pengajian Tinggi dan Hal Ehwal Agama Negeri Melaka, serta Naib Canselor UNIMEL, Prof. Datuk Dr. Ts. Abdul Khalil Shawkataly. Kehadiran mereka mencerminkan sokongan padu terhadap usaha memperkasakan komuniti melalui kerjasama erat antara kerajaan negeri, institusi pendidikan dan masyarakat.
Menurut Prof. Datuk Dr. Ts. Abdul Khalil Shawkataly, penglibatan mahasiswa dalam program berteraskan komuniti merupakan platform terbaik untuk membentuk graduan yang bukan sahaja cemerlang dari aspek akademik, malah memiliki nilai kepimpinan, keprihatinan sosial dan semangat kesukarelawanan.
“Program seperti ini memberi peluang kepada mahasiswa untuk menghayati tanggungjawab sosial serta menyumbang secara langsung kepada kesejahteraan masyarakat. Pengalaman di lapangan ini mampu membentuk generasi yang lebih berdaya saing, berintegriti dan prihatin terhadap keperluan komuniti,” katanya.
Selaras dengan agenda Matlamat Pembangunan Mampan (Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs), program ini menyokong SDG 4: Pendidikan Berkualiti menerusi pembelajaran berasaskan pengalaman (experiential learning) yang membentuk mahasiswa holistik dan berjiwa masyarakat. Pada masa yang sama, usaha menceriakan kemudahan awam menyumbang kepada SDG 11: Bandar dan Komuniti Mampan dengan mewujudkan persekitaran yang lebih kondusif, bersih dan selamat untuk kegunaan masyarakat. Kerjasama erat antara UNIMEL, Kerajaan Negeri Melaka dan komuniti setempat pula mencerminkan aspirasi SDG 17: Perkongsian Demi Matlamat, yang menekankan kepentingan kolaborasi strategik dalam menghasilkan impak pembangunan yang mampan.
Program WRUR DUN Ayer Molek membuktikan bahawa mahasiswa UNIMEL mampu menjadi ejen perubahan melalui sumbangan idea, tenaga dan kreativiti dalam menghasilkan impak positif kepada masyarakat.
Daripada sebuah jejantas yang diberi nafas baharu, lahir satu mesej yang lebih besar – mahasiswa bukan sekadar menimba ilmu di bilik kuliah, bahkan turut memimpin perubahan, menyemai nilai kebersamaan dan membina masyarakat yang lebih sejahtera selaras dengan aspirasi UNIMEL untuk melahirkan graduan yang berilmu, berakhlak dan berbakti kepada ummah.
